Button Color Testing: Surprise Findings
A business consultant wanted to increase contact form submissions. The existing orange button had a 3.2% click rate.
The Test Setup
We tested five button colors across 8,400 visitors over six weeks. Each variation kept the same text, size, and placement. Only the color changed: orange (control), green, red, blue, and purple.
Numbers That Surprised Us
| Color | Click Rate |
|---|---|
| Blue | 5.7% |
| Purple | 4.9% |
| Green | 3.8% |
| Orange | 3.2% |
| Red | 2.1% |
Blue performed best, likely because it matched the site's professional tone. Red actually hurt conversions, possibly creating urgency that felt pushy for B2B services.
Context Matters
What works for e-commerce doesn't necessarily work for professional services. The audience and industry change everything.
